These are young devotees of the ancient “spirit of the calabash,” known as “Koukou.” The ancient Koukou spirit was the deity preeminent during ancient times, for sportsmen’s, military soldiers and the martial arts. The Koukou are responsible for the amazing human feats of these sports and military men. They can lay on a bed of nails, pierce themselves with sharp knifes, nails etc., and even deflect bullets without so much as a scratch.
